Abstract
This study tried to review NCD(non-communicable diseases) risk factors in developing countries, especially in the context of Laos. We tried to find out gender differences between women and men¡¯s NCD risk factors in the communities level, and identified if Laotian government has any gender sensitive NCD health policy approaches to fill the gap and differences. In Laos, NCDs are estimated to become the main death causes of adult population in these days. Using 2012 STEP survey in Laos, we found out NCD risk factors between women and men are different in Laos. Many women¡¯s behavior and conditions are very different with those of men¡¯s, not only in alcohol consumption and tobacco, but also in the excercise, obesity, BMI, nutrition and diet etc. As NCDs are emerging main and important health issues in Laos, Laotian government integrated the national NCD prevention and management policies in its national health development plan in 2000¡¯s. However, we could not find out women-focused NCD approaches in the Laotian government¡¯s NCD policies and the national health plan. It is needed to integrate gender sensitive NCD approaches in the country¡¯s NCD policies and the national health plan to address gender differences and the gap between women and men¡¯s NCD risk factors in Laos.
